Each of the cultures on Edadh is comprised of numerous clans. Each clan is self-governing and self-sufficient. The clan members are a very tight knit group, having great knowledge of one another and aiding and protecting each other in times of need.
Each clan has its own territory within which their laws and customs hold sway and to which any passing visitors must adhere. Traditionally, all travelers are received courteously and are granted shelter and food for at least a night. Many of the clans still uphold this ancient custom, but there are those who have now turned their backs on all the old ways, treating strangers with suspicion and open hostility.
Within a culture, the separate clans are united by some common laws and traditions, but relations between neighbouring clans can vary from strained to friendly. A clan may even have conquered its neighbours, thus coming to govern over a larger area and in some cultures there have even been one or two clans that have managed to conquer numerous others to form Kingdoms.
Within these Kingdoms each clan will still be self-governing to some extent but must now abide by laws imposed on them by the dominant clan, just like all clans must now abide by the laws and rules imposed on them by the Dzaa. Links and friendships between clans, Kingdoms and cultures are regularly sealed by marriages between the sons and daughters of the clans' royalty and chieftains, thereby making them more defensible.
